The
figurative works of Carla Bustamante de Veliz
are both beautiful and thought provoking.
Primarily female, the figures have a stunning
grace that is made edgy by uneven, perfectly
round breasts or eyes that are slightly mismatched.
Even her most perfectly proportioned figures
inspire study as the viewer works through
the emotional content in each. Gordis,
for example is a woman perfectly at home in
her body, although is it larger than the supermodel
ideal. La Embarazada, obviously
but very abstractly pregnant, speaks of the
joy of pregnancy, but also of the deep emotions
and physical changes that accompany it. Carlas
figures are bold and attention grabbing, yet
universal enough to fit into any collection.
